History of Bethany Church

Who is the founder of Bethany Church?

Bethany Church, originally known as Bethany World Prayer Center, was founded by Reverend Roy Stockstill in August 1963 in Baker, Louisiana. Starting with just a few people in a small house, the church has since grown to serve the communities of Baker, North Baton Rouge, and the surrounding areas.

Under Reverend Roy Stockstill’s leadership, Bethany Church’s influence spread worldwide through the planting of hundreds of other churches by associate ministers. Reverend Roy Stockstill passed away in 2016, and his son, Larry Stockstill, took over as pastor of Bethany Church in 1983, serving until 2011. Following in his father’s footsteps, Larry Stockstill then passed the leadership to his son, Jonathan Stockstill, on October 2, 2011.

Pastor Jonathan Stockstill now leads Bethany Church with a fresh vision to see Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas transformed for Christ, and to ignite people’s hearts with passion for the Kingdom of God. The mission of Bethany Church is clear and concise – to bring all people into the abundant life, loving family, and fulfilling purpose of God.

With a rich Godly heritage and a legacy that spans three generations, Bethany Church has grown to encompass five campuses and nearly 10,000 members. The South Baton Rouge campus, constructed in 2000 off Siegen Lane and I-10, serves as the main hub for pastoral, creative, and experience offices, as well as The Warehouse, where young adult and student experiences take place. It is also home to Bethany Christian School, and the iconic 150-foot crosses at the front of the campus serve as a beacon of hope to those passing by.

In February 2014, the Livingston Parish campus was launched to serve the Livingston Parish community. And in the Fall of 2017, the Houma campus was opened, catering to those who call Lafourche or Terrebonne Parish their home. Come be a part of the exciting things happening at Bethany Church on the bayou!

Bethany Church Vision and Mission Statements

Mission: our mission is to bring all people into the life, family and purpose of God.

We believe anyone who is connected to Christ in these three key areas are poised to thrive in every other area of life.

We don’t just believe in our mission statement, we also live it out and express these principles practically. To us, ‘all people’ represents the rich cultural and generational diversity that makes up the Kingdom of God. Being connected to the life of Christ means growing daily as a disciple. Being a part of the family of God means being a part of a life giving community of believers, like a Bgroup. Finding purpose in the life and family of God looks like serving on the Ateam, going on a missions trip, or serving our local community through outreaches.

Bethany Church Beliefs.

  • God: There is one God and that He is completely perfect and existent in the persons of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
  • Jesus: We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles, and paid for our sins by His shed blood and death on the Cross. We believe that He rose from the dead and ascended to the right hand of the Father and that He will return in power and glory.
  • The Holy Spirit: We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and that His presence in the life of a Christian enables them to live a Godly life. We also believe that the Holy Spirit provides one or more spiritual gifts to all believers, manifesting them as He desires. We further believe that all of the gifts of the Holy Spirit are available to Christians today. We believe that the Bible is Holy Spirit-inspired, that it is the authoritative Word of God, and that it is forever reliable.
  • Salvation: We believe that salvation is by grace, through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; those that are saved are resurrected to eternal life and those that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
  • The Church: We believe there is one universal Church, which is the Body of Christ. We believe Christ is the head of the Church and that all born-again believers are its members. We believe the church’s purpose is to offer worship to God, fellowship, ministry and instruction to itself, and evangelism and service to the world. We believe in the 5 fold ministry listed in Ephesians 4 (Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers). We believe and encourage the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • Baptism: We believe in the believer’s water baptism by immersion in obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe in the importance of a believer’s regular participation in communion.
  • The Supernatural: We believe in the ministry and presence of angels, the reality of the devil, and demonic forces.
  • Sanctity of Life: We believe in the sanctity of human life and that life begins at the moment of conception.
  • Purity & Marriage: We believe in and endorse abstinence from sexual activity for Christian single men and women; and that Christian marriage is sacred. We define marriage alone as a union between one man and one woman.
  • Healing: We believe that the “stripes” placed upon Jesus Christ back at his crucifixion provide physical healing to all who will believe and receive.
